Welcome to the Derman Computer Web Page.

This is the place to come for information about computer classes, computer repair, and computer upgrading.  If you have a computer that you need repaired or upgraded, you can E-mail me at robert@dermancomputer.com or call me at 715.425.2869

You can also read the latest edition of my newsletter Personal Technology Today, Weblog.  Which is updated frequently and carries articles about Personal Computers, Home Entertainment Electronics, and other developments in electronics and technology that may effect our daily lives.  It is set up as a weblog, so that in addition to the latest article, there are also previous articles that you may find interesting.

You can learn how to build, upgrade, and repair personal computers yourself.  I offer a course that consists of four three hour evening sessions, each one week apart, on Monday's, Tuesday's, Wednesday's, Thursday's, or Friday's.  This class is not for those intending to pursue  a career in computers, but it's ideal for anyone who wants to learn how to build and maintain their own computer, or computers for their family and friends. For a brief background on the class, see Computer Class.  For more information, you can read my Computer Textbook.  The textbook is illustrated with photos, and is brutally honest about brand name computers.  This book is in PDF format, so it can be displayed or printed using Adobe Acrobat Reader, which you are almost certain to have on your computer.  The book is about 1.75 MB in size, so if you have a dial-up connection, it may take about a minute to download.  For a shorter read in HTML, there is the Newbies Guide .  It will also give you a good idea of what the class is about.  For registered students, enter your password, and you can access the special Student Discount Price List.  If you are interested in having me build you a new computer, you can look at my Retail Price List, which is updated weekly.  The prices for computer parts are very volatile, they go up and down like wheat futures.  So it is important to update price lists at least weekly.

If you would like, you can be included on the email list for my monthly computer and technology newsletter.  I email out a short text only newsletter that won't clog your inbox, and I won't share your e-mail address with anyone!    Just e-mail me at the above address and I will enter you on my e-mail list.

Also on my website is a document called Transportation.  I wrote it many years ago and have revised it slightly since then.  It details my views about how the ground transportation system in the United States could be vastly improved.

P.S. All the content of this web page and its links were written using the HTML features of the OpenOffice.org office suite, which is available for download at www.openoffice.org . This is open source software, and like the Linux operating system, is free of charge to anyone who wants to use it.  A new free Linux operating system has also become available very recently, it is called Freespire, and it is much more suitable for home computer systems than any previous free of cost Linux systems.  It is available for download at   www.freespire.org
